Tatreez (تَطْرِيز) is a traditional Palestinian embroidery. This art of decorating fabrics, most often the traditional Palestinian woman`s dress called thobe (ثوبة), was originally practiced in rural areas of Palestine. Each village and surrounding area have its own distinct tatreez motifs that includes a variety of symbols from architecture, agriculture, geometric patterns, animal motifs etc. Different colors and patterns of tatreez on a woman`s thobe signifies her regional identity and social position. By looking at a beautiful handmade Palestinian woman`s dress you could learn where she comes from and whether she is an unmarried girl, married or a widow.  

The most common embroidery style in Palestine is the cross-stitch, known as fallahi (فلاحي), from the Arabic word that indicates a rural person.

The art of embroidery in Palestine, including its practices, skills, knowledge, and rituals, was inscribed in 2021. on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
